Constitutio Antoniniana
Welcome to the website for the Papyrus Gissensis 40, the world’s only document with the original text of the Constitutio Antoniniana. This is an edict issued by Roman Emperor Caracalla in 212/213 that granted Roman citizenship to all free inhabitants of the Roman Empire.

The Constitutio Antoniniana was granted Memory of the World status in 2017 and is inscribed on UNESCO’s list of registered world heritage documents.
